De vouw

Match-match   Mestlab 31- Carel Lanters- Lens

le Pli, de vouw, the fold, die Falte. Carel Lanters

Passers-by ask the story behind the sculptures; given the character of this exhibition, I have put the following text in the shop.
The artist's premise is based on the theory of human perception, according to the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and his Baroque predecessor, Leibniz, in the book "Le Pli”, “the Fold”.
In this book, our head is presented as a kind of Camera Obscura. This is a dark space with a small hole through which reality is projected upside down.
In their view, reality is projected on a folded screen.
Due to the pleated surface, we only perceive part of reality. The rest remains in the dark. Imagine that the screen is stretched; then we see twice as much.
The cast of a face with closed eyes gives the feeling of - looking inward - and connects with the folds. Together they form the imagination for the human perception.
The spatial feeling of the images is enhanced by adding some lenses in the folds.
