Museum Kranenburgh   "stilte is als ademhalen"

Al kun je stilte niet zien, toch hebben veel kunstenaars, zoals Carel Lanters, geprobeerd die geluidloosheid, rust en vredigheid te verbeelden.
Schrijver en essayist Joost Zwagerman raakte gefascineerd door het onderwerp en stelde een tentoonstelling samen met stilte als rode draad.

Though you can not see silence, still have a lot of artists like Carel Lanters, tried to depict the quietness, peace and tranquility.

Writer and essayist Joost Zwagerman became fascinated by the subject and did put together an exhibition about silence as a thread.

The development of an artist comes and goes in waves.


In 1989 I made reconstructions of shapes, which I found in early manuscripts like the Book of Kells, to understand what these 8th century Irish monks were doing.  You can read about this artistic period in the next pages written by Gerrit Willems, NL.
In the exhibition "Lanters/v Nunen", some of these sculptures are newly painted and assembled. Recently this way of making art came back, by researching a cross I found in a stone slab in a place called Cill na Seacht Ninion on the island Inis oirr at the Irish westcoast.

Cill na Seacht Ninion (halfway between the watch tower and the lake) This is known locally as AN CHILL. While it is recorded as the oldest monastic site on the island and is associated with Naomh Moninne, the first saint to inhabit the island, it is not generally visited by locals as a place of pilgrimage at present. The "sleeping quarters" in the perimeter wall are reminiscent of the catacombs in Rome. While 'Cill na Seacht nIníon' is translated as 'Church of the Seven Daughters' Seacht in Irish also means several or many.

In 1989 maakte ik reconstructies van vormen, welke ik vond in oude manuscripten zoals het Book of Kells, om te begrijpen wat deze 8ste eeuwse Ierse monniken aan het doen waren.

In de huidige tentoonstelling zijn een aantal beelden uit die periode opnieuw van kleur voorzien en geassembleerd. 
Recent is deze manier van werken weer terug, door het onderzoek dat ik dit jaar deed naar een kruis dat ik vond in een steen op de plek met de naam Cill na Seacht Ninion, op het eiland Inis Oirr ten westen van Ierland.

Sustainable energy in an Iberian dance

Arnhem based artist Carel Lanters made this concept: a large sculpture in about 200 layers, rotating at low speed, using sustainable energy. In cooperation with engineer and artist Egbert Bouwhuis, also based in Arnhem.

The sculpture represents an Iberian dancer with revolving rotation linked to the available energy produced by waterpower, wind power and sunlight power. The amount of the different power supplies are made visible by means of several telescopic vertical signs on top of the sculpture.

She tells the story of renewable energy she needs for her movement. The image has a multitude of functions to be discovered by the onlooker, who can also use an application on a personal device, to manipulate rotation-speed.  

We are talking with several corporations to realize this sculpture at a certain place in or around Arnhem at a size of approximately  15 meters. This will take several years of development. In the meantime it would be of great interest to develop a smaller scale sculpture (about 5 meters) with the same technology and public interfaces for the public space.

We would like to discuss this opportunity with you.

At the end of this month we will start to realize a model with the technological interfaces at a studio in the centre of Arnhem: JP van Muijlwijkstraat 23.

Kunt u mij de weg wijzen naar het CBK?       Verspreid door de stad en de buitenwijken,160 locaties, email op staal

In de loop van de tijd zijn er borden verdwenen omdat palen een muren verdwenen. 60 borden zijn teruggekomen bij de gemeente. de ontbrekende afbeeldingen zijn geprint op aluminium en samen met de emaille borden op de zuidgevel van het gemeentehuis bevestigd tot een nieuw kunstwerk.

Geschiedenis.

Op 160 plaatsen in Emmen vroeg ik voorbijgangers om mij de weg te wijzen naar het CBK, het kunstcentrum gelegen in het stadhuis. Tegen een herkenbare achtergrond werden deze mensen -wijzend- gefotografeerd. 
Deze afbeeldingen werden via een aantal processen uitgevoerd in email borden. Deze borden werden op dezelfde plaatsen waar de ‘wijzers’ stonden, gemonteerd aan palen en muren. Op deze wijze ontstond een gelaagd kunstwerk, verspreid over de gehele stad. De herkenbare achtergrond, welke op het bord wordt herhaald, werkt als oriëntatieveld. De borden (de wijsrichtingen) volgend, komt men bij het CBK. Het beeld is een tijdsmonument: mensen worden oud, architectuur, mode, auto’s, etc. veranderen. De afbeeldingen blijven hetzelfde. Doordat de omgeving monochroom wordt herhaald, ontstaan een soort ruisonderdrukkers. De uitvoering nam de jaren 1996 tot 1998 in beslag, ook om de seizoens-wisselingen te vangen. Het resultaat werd mogelijk door intensieve samenwerking met de bevolking.

Can you point out the way to the cultural centre?

In 1998 I asked 160 people in Emmen (the North of the Netherlands) to show me the way to the cultural centre. They were photographed by Herman van Ommen. These were produced in emaille plates which were installed at the same places were the "pointers" were standing, to poles and walls.
In the years after many plates got lost because of reconstructing the city. 60 plates came back. the missing pictures were reconstructed on aluminium plates. Together they are installed to the south wall of the cityhall. A new work of art. 2015.

Kunt u mij de weg wijzen naar het CBK?

Een van de meest geslaagde straatkunstwerken in Emmen is Kunt u mij de weg wijzen naar het Centrum Beeldende Kunst? Carel Lanters ontwierp in 1996 voor dit werk - volgens het CBK Emmen - 160 emaille bordjes met foto's van mensen die de weg wijzen naar datzelfde CBK. Oorspronkelijk vormden de bordjes een route naar de tentoonstellingsruimte in het Bruggebouw in Emmen.

Omdat tijden moeten veranderen opereert CBK al jaren niet meer vanuit het Bruggebouw. De route klopt niet langer. Ergo: sommige bordjes zijn op de vertrouwde mysterieuze wijze uit het straatbeeld verdwenen. Mede om die reden werd eerder dit jaar door het CBK –  dat dus aan de Ermerweg is gevestigd – besloten tot een herschikking.

Sinds deze zomer is Kunt u mij de weg wijzen naar het Centrum Beeldende Kunst? te bewonderen aan een muur van het gemeentehuis bij de ingang van het Marktplein. Volgens het CBK zijn ook de verdwenen foto's weer te zien, nu als fotoprints op aluminium. Maar bij telling – een oplettend burger telt voor twee – blijken aan de muur geen 160 bordjes te hangen, maar 144.

Nu stapte ik zondagavond uit de trein om door de Stationsstraat naar huis te wandelen. Daarbij passeerde ik een paar onwelriekende Dixi-keetjes die bij de bushalte naar Ter Apel zijn neergezet om bezoekers van het asielzoekerscentrum een gelegenheid te bieden zichzelf in Emmen te ontlasten alvorens ze op buslijn 73 stappen.

En wat zag ik daar net voorbij het laatste keetje? Een bordje met foto van een man in een on-Drentse pantalon die de kijker de weg wijst naar het CBK. Anders dan de stiefelende dame verderop weet de man het precies: dezelfde richting als van het kantoor van de VVV; wat tot de opheffing van deze club in Emmen stond voor Vereniging Veemdelingenverkeer.

article about my first work in public space. In the building to which the reliefs are made, 14 apartments are planned. First they wanted to cut 2 windows in the artwork, which I refused. Now the plan is to make windows on top. We will see!
